Operations Manager – start date: Sept 1st 2025

We’re looking for someone who

  • shares the ethos and aspirations of Bread for Good Community Benefit Society (Scotland The Bread), i.e. a healthy transformation of the local grain and bread economy 
  • has a good deal of the knowledge, skills and demonstrable first-hand experience relevant to the main tasks listed below and is keen to fill in any gaps
  • is capable of working independently and exercising initiative within the overall governance of the charity
  • has excellent organisational, communication and computer skills

Main tasks

  • manage and develop the production, sales, communications and community outreach of Scotland The Bread 
  • achieve a sustained positive financial margin from the Society’s commercial operations
  • recruit and manage co-workers responsible for grain handling, flour milling, order fulfilment, wholesale and retail customer retention and development, online sales and website/communications
  • manage processing of orders, invoicing, stock ordering and control, report performance to relevant trustees, and negotiate with suppliers                           
  • supervise and regularly update the HACCP quality system to comply with all aspects of the Society’s organic certification (including preparing the annual audit with SOPA) and all relevant food hygiene and safety regulations
  • contribute to and implement the Society’s marketing and sales strategy in order to increase the reach and social impact of organic locally-grown nutrient-dense grain and flour (managing existing and prospecting new clients etc)
  • organise participation in Bowhouse food markets and similar events (including the annual Scottish Festival of Real Bread), and develop an active cohort of local volunteers
  • maintain financial and administrative records and liaise at least monthly with the Society’s honorary Treasurer and other trustees as required
  • maintain and develop the Society’s website as a key tool for building our community of practice and attracting support and funding

Terms, place etc

Hours : 4 days (0.8 FTE), potentially rising to five days

Tenure: Permanent contract after successful 6 months probation 

Reports to: Andrew Whitley (co-founder and honorary chair)

Place of work: The Bowhouse, St. Monans, Anstruther, Fife KY10 2FB. Some work can be done from home

Pay: £30,000 pro rata plus 5% pension contribution

Starting date: September 1st 2025 (or sooner)
