SUMMARY:Scottish Festival of Real Bread 2025
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday February 15th\, 2025\nLocation: Bowhouse\, Fife \n\nAV Dept\, Bowhouse\, Cambo Estate\, Craig Millar @ 16 West End\, DoBooks\, Edinburgh Bakers Trust\, Jeffrey Crawford & Co.\, Mhor Bread\, Mungoswells Malt & Milling\, The Rowett Institute\, SOPA\, Quas Drinks. \nThe Scottish Festival of Real Bread is back\, and it’s the perfect way to kick off Real Bread Week 2025 (15 to 23 February)! This celebration of the best in bread-making offers the chance to immerse yourself in the world of Real Bread\, from simply eating it to debating the future of grain systems. Once again\, a highlight of the Festival will be the awards ceremony of the annual Scottish Bread Championship\, as well as a communal bread stall selling some of the finest loaves Scotland has to offer. \n\n Book Tickets\n \n\n \nEntry is free\, but some events are ticketed and donations are encouraged to support Scotland The Bread’s work. \n\n Book Tickets\n \n\nScottish Bread Championship\nThe Scottish Bread Championship will be judged on Friday 14th\, and this year we particularly want to support as many people as possible to feel confident enough to enter The People’s Bread category. The ‘People’s Bread’ is simply a well-fermented loaf\, made with a high proportion of locally-milled organic Scottish-grown grain\, aimed at producing a nutritious\, affordable and accessible bread for everybody. It could be sourdough or flatbread\, a tin loaf or rolls. Read more about our standard here. \nThe Championship might be a competition but it’s also a celebration: we’d like to encourage you to work towards submitting your best loaf\, not necessarily trying to beat everyone else’s\, and are here to support everyone towards the ultimate result – baking the loaf you want. \nFor more information and to enter the Scottish Bread Championship\, click here.

SUMMARY:Scotland The Bread at Bowhouse August Market Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Join Scotland The Bread at Bowhouse’s ever-popular Market Weekend from 10am – 4pm on the 14th and 15th August. Our stalls will have bags of our organic flour available for sale\, alongside sourdough starters and Bread Matters books that explain everything you need to know about why and how to make nutritious\, tasty bread at home. \nIn 2018 we first harvested our nutritious\, organic\, heritage grains on Balcaskie Estate\, where Bowhouse is based. These are milled onsite to produce a range of flours that is nutritionally strong and good for the soil in which it is grown too. You’ll be able to watch our Zentrofan flour mill in action – the first in the UK. This is the ideal opportunity to find out more about the Real Bread movement and the difference between properly made bread and mass-produced loaves. \nWe are always grateful for volunteers to help support our stalls on market days. If you have a spare couple of hours and would be able to lend a hand bagging and selling flour\, talking to people about Real Bread and earning our eternal thanks\, please email connie.hunter@scotlandthebreadwebsite-2i8jlecuna.live-website.com. \nFinally\, we’ll be inviting as many people as possible to become shareholders in Bread for Good Community Benefit Society (which trades as Scotland The Bread) and thus support our work to change Scottish bread for good and all. Shareholders get one year’s subscription free which entitles them to 15% off the cost of flour. \n\n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

SUMMARY:Supper & Conversation: My Life and Loaves at Trill Farm\, Devon
DESCRIPTION:Scotland The Bread Chairman Andrew Whitley is the Speaker for Trill Farm’s Supper & Conversation\n\nTalk Title – My Life and Loaves\n\n\nSix loaves\, from Seneca’s white to sourdough rye\, nestle in Andrew Whitley’s knapsack\, providing food for thought on his life’s journey. In a ‘conceptual fermentation’ entitled My Life and Loaves he ponders how a fascination with Russian language and literature led to life as an artisan baker\, organic grower\, campaigner for real bread and champion of diversity against monocultures of minds and grains. \nAbout the speaker\nAndrew started the organic Village Bakery in Cumbria in the 1970s and is founder of Bread Matters Ltd. He wrote the seminal Bread Matters and the best-selling DO Sourdough. He has an MSc in Food Policy from City University London and is credited with ‘changing the way we think about bread’ (BBC Food & Farming Awards). He co-founded the Real Bread Campaign in 2008. He is now chair of Scotland The Bread\, an action research and training charity that grows and mills diverse\, nutrient-dense cereals in Fife with the aim of creating a healthy\, fair and sustainable grain and bread supply. \nAbout Supper & Conversation at Trill Farm\n\n\n\nSupper & Conversation provides an opportunity to enjoy an inspiring talk followed by a convivial supper\, sharing ideas and evolving positive ways forward. Speakers include writers\, innovators\, critics\, political agitators and environmentalists\, and aim to be informative\, to stimulate thinking\, to make us laugh and to amaze us. \nThe suppers are inspired by the content of the talk and from the seasonal abundance of the farm. The Old Dairy Kitchen now will be selling alcohol at these events with a delicious range of natural wines and locally produced beers and ciders to pick from (not included in the price of the dinner ticket). \n\nEvent times: 6pm for a 6.30pm start.\n£5 ticket is for the talk only\nCarry on the conversation afterwards over a seasonal supper in the Old Dairy Kitchen by purchasing the Talk & Supper ticket for £30 \nClick the link below to book tickets directly from the Trill Farm website.

SUMMARY:Scotland The Bread at Bowhouse September Food Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This #SourdoughSeptember our monthly appearance at Bowhouse Food Weekend will be supplemented by sourdough-making sessions and other workshops. Come along and learn how to make sourdough\, pick up some #heritageflour to practice with at home\, and fill the gaps in your baking kit with our books and equipment. \nThe harvest-themed market will be packed with traders literally selling the pick of the Scottish crop – hope to see you there! \nIn 2018 we first harvested our nutritious and traditional grains on Balcaskie Estate\, where Bowhouse is based. These are now milled onsite to produce a range of flours that is nutritionally strong and good for the soil in which it is grown too.

SUMMARY:Scotland's Good Food Nation Bill in a global context
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Food Coalition and Food Researchers in Edinburgh are hosting a seminar with Professor Corinna Hawkes\, Director of the Centre for Food Policy at City University. \nCorinna has worked for the World Health Organization (Geneva)\, the International Food Policy Research Institute (Washington DC) and in 2009-2010\, held a fellowship at the School of Public Health at the University of Sao Paulo\, Brazil. Taking an inter-disciplinary approach\, Corinna has published widely on food policy from farm to fork and the link with diets and nutrition\, including on the policies and processes of globalization\, trade policy\, agriculture policies\, nutrition labelling and policies on food marketing to children. A regular advisor to governments\, international agencies and NGOs\, her specialism is the role of food systems policies in what we eat and how they can be levered for positive impact. \nShe will be bringing this wealth of experience and expertise to Scotland to discuss the opportunity of the Good Food Nation Bill to create the framework for a fair\, healthy and sustainable food system in Scotland. \nThe Good Food Nation Bill featured in the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government in September 2016\, and they have indicated that they will begin a wide-ranging consultation process in 2017. Cabinet Secretary for Communities\, Social Security and Equalities Angela Constance has said that they are looking at including the right to food in the Good Food Nation Bill. We have a real opportunity to put Scotland’s food system on a different footing\, come along to this seminar to learn from Corinna’s experience from across the world\, and discuss what we can achieve here with this new legislation. \nRegister to attend this event here.
