September 8, 2018 @ 10:00 am - September 9, 2018 @ 4:00 pm
This Sourdough September, Scotland The Bread will be celebrating its relocation to Bowhouse at Balcaskie Estate during Bowhouse Food Weekend on the 8 / 9 September.
Come and watch our Zentrofan flour mill in action – the first in the UK. Then each morning and afternoon visitors can book onto a hands-on sourdough session (booking on the day), using grains grown in the fields around Bowhouse and milled on-site. These will cost just £2.50 per participant, with a limit of 10 per session.
This year sees the first harvest of our nutritious and traditional grains on Balcaskie Estate, where Bowhouse is based. These will be milled at Bowhouse to produce a range of flours that is nutritionally strong and good for the soil in which it is grown too. This is the ideal opportunity to find out more about the real bread movement and the difference between properly made bread and mass-produced loaves.
In addition to the Sourdough Sessions, we will have a display of the ten varieties of grain (wheat and rye) that Balcaskie have grown for Scotland The Bread this year. People will be invited to take a close look and evaluate the considerable diversity in some of the unusual varieties we have grown compared to a modern one which will be there for comparison.
We will also be milling the grains, both in Unit 8 (but this may not be manned continuously) and in the hall, with small electric mills and a hand mill. People will be able to experience the amazing aroma and feel of freshly milled Scottish grain.
And of course, bags of flour will be available for sale, as will sourdough starters and Bread Matters books that explain everything you need to know about why and how to make nutritious, tasty bread at home.
Finally, we’ll be inviting as many people as possible to become shareholders in Bread for Good Community Benefit Society (which trades as Scotland The Bread) and thus support our work to change Scottish bread for good and all. Shareholders get one year’s subscription free which entitles them to 15% off the cost of flour.
